as part of the Ministry's efforts to enhance safety culture across all employees and safeguard their health and wellbeing from occupational hazards, including those associated with handling chemicals used by companies in the (production - refining and manufacturing - petrochemicals - marketing) sectors of the petroleum industry, an educational awareness campaign has been launched across all companies on the safe handling of chemicals. The campaign included raising awareness of the dangers associated with chemicals. This initiative is in line with directives issued by Eng./Karim Badawi, the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, to provide all necessary measures for safe operation and to enhance all aspects of process safety across the Ministry’s production sites, refineries, and petrochemical companies, in accordance with internationally applied standards. Chemist /Gamal Fathy, the Minister's Advisor for Occupational Safety, Health, and Environmental Protection, inaugurated the campaign from within Sidi Kerir Petrochemicals Company (SIDPEC), in the presence of Eng./Mohamed Ibrahim, Chairman of SIDPEC, and Dr Mohamed El-Masry, Assistant for Occupational Safety, Health, and Environmental Protection, alongside the company’s safety leaders. Mohamed Ibrahim delivered a presentation outlining SIDPEC's commitment to adhering to the highest safety standards across all its activities, highlighting the company’s receipt of several quality management certifications, including ISO-9001 for quality, ISO-50001 for energy management, ISO-14001 for environmental management, and ISO-45001 for occupational safety and health. Additionally, the company’s laboratories have been accredited with ISO-17025, and SIDPEC follows a comprehensive chemical handling and safety system throughout the stages of handling, transport, and storage, in accordance with the Global Harmonised System (GHS). The presentation also showcased SIDPEC’s efforts in supporting and advancing the safety system, as well as projects for environmental compliance, energy conservation, and efficiency improvements. The company reaffirmed its commitment to placing occupational safety, health, and environmental protection at the core of its operations, prioritising safe operations and increased production. The application of digital transformation technologies was also highlighted, with programmes such as the electronic Work Permit and Hazard Management systems being introduced, alongside other digital tools designed to boost efficiency, enhance performance, and ensure safe operation. Special emphasis was placed on the importance of human resources, with staff training conducted either internally or at training centres, and the company's participation in joint drills with sister companies and the central region to ensure readiness in case of emergencies. A field tour of various production units was conducted, during which the committee inspected the polyethylene plant. Chemist/Mohamed El-Shamy, General Manager of the Polyethylene Department, provided an explanation of the plant’s operational processes and the occupational safety and health measures in place for chemical handling, as well as the electronic Work Permit system and follow-up procedures. The committee also visited the control room within the safety building, where systems for monitoring gas emissions from production units and automatic fire suppression systems are housed. Emergency response plans, evacuation procedures, and crisis management strategies were also reviewed.
