In recognition of the efforts of the petrochemical industry sector in Egypt, represented by Sidi Kerir Petrochemical Company (SIDPEC) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) over the past ten years to maximize the benefit of improving energy efficiency and its environmental, economic and societal returns, the closing ceremony of the project to support peer communication to enhance energy efficiency in the petrochemical and plastic industries in Egypt was held as one of the projects to improve industrial energy efficiency and the possibility of implementing solar energy applications for the petrochemical sector and the plastic industry. The ceremony was attended by a group of leaders and high-level officials from the Ministry of Petroleum, the Petrochemical Holding Company (ECHEM), the Federation of Egyptian Industries (FEI), major plastic manufacturers as well as representatives from SIDPEC, UNIDO, and Chemonics Egypt. It is worth mentioning that the petrochemical industry is one of the pillars of the national economy, accounting for about 3% of GDP and 12% of the industrial sector. The petrochemicals and fertilizers sector consumes about 16% of total natural gas consumption. Egypt's petrochemical industry has grown over the past three years, with exports of petrochemical products growing by 22% in 2022. With the growing global interest in achieving net-zero emissions, the current trend is to implement a number of climate-change projects to reduce carbon emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels. Petrochemical companies have emerged aiming to rely more on clean and renewable energy. Sidi Kerir Petrochemical Company worked in cooperation with UNIDO to implement a project to support peer communication to improve energy efficiency in the petrochemical and plastics industries as well as pave the way for solar energy applications by providing the necessary technical support to plastic and petrochemical companies.
